Communal Corridors is an urban design and research project for the Apgujeong neighborhood in Seoul, South Korea. Upon visiting the site our team noticed a few challenges and opportunities in the Apgujeong area which included: old apartment buildings dating from the 1970s at high rent, the lack of use and poor maintenance of the waterfront property, and the lack of space for residents and visitors that is overtaken by parking. The purpose of the project is to increase accessibility to the waterfront of Han River, promoting walkability through a series of connected spaces (commercial and educational corridors) and provide public space for residents and visitors to use. By prioritizing spaces for commercial activity and recreation we hope that the project will be able to attract residents and visitors, increase foot traffic, and decrease space occupied by vehicles in order to give back space to the Apgujeong community.  Additionally, the project also proposes three different apartment complex designs for a potential reconstruction of the existing, older apartment buildings, ranging from low-height, higher-density layouts to taller and lower-density tower layouts.
