FORMAL DISCUSSIONS ON URBAN ISSUES: LOCAL AS A SPECTACLE
Summer 2023 | Syracuse University
Locations: Japan (Tokyo, Kyoto, Onomichi, Fukuoka) and South Korea (Busan, Seoul)

Preliminary research consisted of creating a Kit-of-Parts of all the different activities/spectacles that I observed in every city that I visited during my time abroad in Japan and South Korea.

I then paired each activity/spectacle to the streets and landscapes at which I found them to analyze the different scales of the spaces. Smaller-scale spectacles were often statues, shrines, small restaurant stands, and small shops while Bigger-scale spectacles were large tourist destinations within the cities, neighborhoods, and other city infrastructures.

I then began to map out the different scales of spectacles and their locations on a map of Japan and South Korea to see where these small-scale and big-scale activities exist.

The conclusion of this research project resulted in a long image collage of all the different streetscapes and landscapes with their respective spectacles, to give an overall view of what "Locals as a Spectacle" looks like across Japan and South Korea.
